Positive and Negative Aspects of Sports

Sports do us good in many respects (TS). It goes without saying that taking exercises can build up our physical strength. In collective sports like basketball, volleyball, or football, we will learn the importance of cooperation. While taking part in sports game, we will try our best to win and arouse ourselves the competitive spirit. Sports can also help us relax after a period of exhausting work. However, as the saying goes, "there are two sides to everything", and sports is without exception. We may hurt other players or ourselves if we are not careful enough when participating in sports activities. What''s more, excessive or severe training can do harm to our health.

My participation in sports tells me that sports can make us healthy both physically and psychologically. It is also a good way for people to know each other and can promote friendship between people. So long as we are carefully enough, sports can do us nothing but good.

Olympic Games

"The Games of the 29th Olympiad in 2008 are awarded to the city of Beijing."

The International Olympic Committee selected the Chinese capital as the 2008 host in Friday's vote during Juan Antonio Samaranch's last IOC session as president. The attraction of staging the Games in a country which has the world's largest population, as well as huge economic potential, won the IOC's heart.

Beijing defeated four other bidding cities, including Toronto and Paris, to secure the country's first-ever Olympics. Osaka was the first city to go out, and it only took one more round for Beijing to win the Olympic race.

The announcement, read out by the 81-year-old Samaranch, was answered with wild jubilation from the Chinese delegation in Moscow, and with fireworks in Beijing.IOC senior member Kim Un-Yong said after the voting that Beijing deserved the Olympic Games.

"Beijing is capable of staging a great Olympic Games," said the 71-year-old South Korean. "The result wasn't a surprise to me."

With the motto "New Beijing, Great Olympics", Beijing promises to host a "Green Olympics", a "Hi-tech Olympics" and the "People's Olympics".

The 3,000-year-old city is becoming a truly international city and showing a new, vigorous image through its ongoing economic reforms.

Beijing enjoys the widest popular support among the five bidding cities. A Gallup opinion poll commissioned by the government showed 94.9 percent of the public in favor of it. The IOC's own surveys found support even higher. The Chinese government has pledged to spend 20 billion U.S. dollars building sports complexes and refurbishing the Beijing infrastructure. There are plans for a new exhibition center with twin skyscrapers that could be taller than any in the world.

  Dangerous Sports Should Be Banned

When we speak of the ancient Romans, we can't help thrilling at the slaughter in their arenas which theytook as entertainment. Well, any way, this happened 2,000 years ago.But are modern people less blood-thirsty? Why do boxing matches attract such universal interest? Don't the spectators hope to see some violence. ?

It is really incredible that in this age we should still allow hunting and bull-fighting, that we should beprepared to sit back and watch two men fight each other in a boxing ring, that we should be relatively unmovedby the sight Of one or a number of racing cars Crashing and bursting into flames. People take part in violent sports because of the high rewards they bring. Spectators are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence. A lot of people are disappointed if a fight is over in two rounds instead of fifteen just because they have been deprived of the exquisite pleasure of witnessing prolonged torture and violence.

Why should we ban violent sports since people enjoy them so much? The answer is simple, they are uncivilized.

For centuries man has been trying to improve himself spiritually gress has been made m science and technology, social welfare systems are in operation in many parts, of the world, and big efforts have been made to increase public wealth. These changes have come about because human beings have taken positive steps to change and improve human civilization. If we banned dangerous and violent sports, we Would be moving one step further to improving mankind.

My favorite Chinese gymnast

In 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Li Xiaopeng and his teammates were outstanding, winning gold in the prestigious men's team event, a first for China's gymnasts. Li Xiaopeng also won an inpidual gold medal in the parallel bars.

However, due to a severe foot injury, Li's performance in 2004 Athens Olympic Games was unsatisfying. China finished 5th in the men's team final and Li only got a bronze in parallel bars after he had been unbeaten since 2000 in major competitions. Li Xiaopeng was tortured by a long-time ankle injury and eventually had an operation in 2005.

In 2008, after suffering through yet another injury, this time in his toe, he came back to compete in the Chinese Nationals and took gold in parallel bars in two World Cups, thus surpassing Li Ning in the number of world titles.

If Chinese men gymnastics can regain men's team event? If Li Xiaopeng will win his second personal Olympic gold medals? I hope so!
