Adventure continues
IT has been 19 years since Indiana Jones wore his leather (皮的) jacket and swung (甩) his whip (鞭子) across a movie screen. But on May 22, the famous archaeologist (考古学家) comes back in the series' fourth movie called, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal (水晶) Skull (头骨).
And many Americans, who grew up loving the adventurer, are ready for his return. Because Jones did more in his three previous movies than simply hunt for treasure, he also found his way into the heart of American culture.
To understand why Americans feel so strongly toward Jones, one must first understand the character. The movies take place in the 1930s. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr. is an archaeology professor. His life is boring. So Jones decides he wants more and he creates his own persona (角色). He becomes Indiana Jones, a treasure hunter who travels the world, defeats bad guys and always wins the girl.
Yet, Jones is not a super hero. He gets hurt, he gets angry and he is deathly afraid of snakes. And that is why he is so popular. "Indiana Jones is not a perfect hero, and his imperfections, I think, make the audience feel that, with a little more exercise and a little more courage, they could be just like him," said Stephen Spielberg, the director of the Jones movies.
Harrison Ford, the actor who plays Indiana Jones said the fun of playing the character was because Indiana is both romantic and cynical (愤世嫉俗的).
It is these two personalities that Americans can relate to. America was built on dreams. And one dream many Americans still hold is that there can be more to life than simply work. They want excitement and adventure and that is what Jones has given Americans over the years. A chance to escape from their own ordinary lives and think, just maybe, they could put on a leather jacket and become a hero too.

A leap of faith
TIGER Leaping Gorge in Yunnan Province is a beautiful place to hike. My good friend Tom Higgins and I arrived one morning last summer and had an enjoyable day — until we got lost.
It was all Tom's fault. I wanted to hike half way then turn around. Instead, we just kept climbing and then he said: "Don't worry, we'll just hitchhike (搭车) back." But the problem was, from where we were, high on the mountain, we couldn't get to the road. We walked through bushes (树丛) and over rocks until hours later we found the road.
We started walking, hoping a car would stop and pick us up. Five minutes went by. Then half an hour. Still no cars. I started getting angry. "Don't worry," Tom said. Finally, a car came. But it was full.
The sky became dark. Finally, a car stopped. The driver wanted 50 yuan to drive us. But Tom said, "No, it was too expensive." The man drove away.
It started raining. We walked for hours and reached town at nightfall. We were supposed to take a 10-yuan bus to Shangri-La (香格里拉), but it had already left. I was getting sad, wet and cold. But Tom said, "Don't worry."
Finally, we saw a van (货车) driven by two young guys. They offered to drive us. It would cost 400 yuan. But now I didn't care how much it cost. Before Tom could open his big mouth, I gave them the money. The kids drove very fast. I was scared for my life. Tom said: "Don't worry." We almost drove off the road five times but finally we made it there. Tom smiled and said, "See, I told you not to worry."
